I will get into more specifics a little further down, but first I'm going to lay out the basics of a general overview of this process.
I want to begin by taking you through the process from the perspective of a prospect.
You can generate your own leads for network marketing or mlm.You are now the potential lead.
I know you can do it, because I do it every day.
How does it start?
Most likely, some event or life circumstance causes you to become acutely aware of a need to solve some specific problem.
Perhaps you hear of a friend having a reaction to her skincare products, and you begin to think about looking for natural organic alternatives to your traditional chemical-laced products.
Maybe your child has a near mishap with some dangerous cleaning chemicals, leading you to go on a hunt for some safer, natural products.
A visit to your doctor reveals that you are on track toward developing diabetes and heart issues unless you lose some weight and get on track to regaining your health.
An unexpected expense forces you to put another charge on your credit card, bringing home the realization yet again that you are living on the brink of financial collapse each month, and that your kids are missing out on things because of it.
Whatever the case, you have decided that something in your life needs to change.
For the sake of this example, let's say it is the close call with your child and the cleaning products.
You will likely begin the process by collecting information.
Where are some places you might begin to look?
You might call and ask some of your friends.
You could find a Facebook group that shares ideas on natural cleaning alternatives.
Perhaps you do a search on Google for “safe chemical-free cleaning products.”
You might also stumble into a relevant forum, find a blog, or wind up on a commercial website in the search results.
Maybe you just ask Siri.
Whatever course you take, there's a fairly high probability that at some point you end up looking for information online.
Imagine that you click on the Adwords ad, a banner on a blog, or a link in a forum post and end up on a page offering a free report on safe cleaning alternatives.
You enter your email address in the box and get the report sent to you immediately.
You download and read through the report right away.
It has great information about how you can protect your family, and some ideas for alternative methods and products which are safe to use.
You didn't realize how dangerous the chemicals under your sink really are!
At the end of the report is a link to buy a recommended ebook with instructions for making more than a dozen different cleaning products, or perhaps to a site where you can learn more about and purchase naturally formulated cleaning products that are tested and certified to be safe for your family.
Over time, you continue to receive informative emails, providing helpful hints on cleaning, and sharing more details about the products, as well as stories form people using them.
You have now just experienced lead generation first-hand.
But from the perspective of the prospect.
By entering your email to request information you found interesting and helpful, you became a lead for someone's network marketing business.
Reverse Engineering the Lead Generation Process
Did you notice how natural the entire process was?
The whole exchange was very low pressure.
No pushy or salesy convincing.
You wanted some specific information, and this person provided it for you.
This is the exact same type of system you are going to want to set up to generate leads for your business.
Key Psychology to Generating Leads
The whole thing is very simple – don't try to overcomplicate it.
Find someone with a problem, and offer them a solution.
Focus on their need, and how to meet it.
This is crucial.
Lead generation fails when the focus is on your company, your product, or your desire to make money.
Focus instead on your prospect and providing great value to them by solving their pressing problem.
Basic Lead Generation System
There are only a few basic components needed to generate leads.
I'm sure you can already imagine much of it as I took you through the example scenario with the cleaning products.
Let's take it step-by-step, so you will know exactly what you need.
We begin by working through in reverse order, from back to front.
The first thing that you need is a product or service.
That should be easy, because you likely have one or more great options with your MLM or network marketing company.
Think about the different problems for which your products or services provide a solution.
Choose just one of these to focus on.
What are the specific pain points someone with that issue is experiencing?
The second thing you will need is a way to communicate with your leads over time, to develop a relationship with them, and to share helpful information about your products or services that may lead them to purchase or join in the future.
Remember, not everyone will buy from you at your first interaction.
In fact, most people will say, “No.” on the initial offering.
Realize that this usually simply means, “Not right now.”
Be patient and stay in contact.
If you have built a relationship and provided value, when the time is right, they will come to you.
The most common tool for communicating with your leads, and my preferred choice, is an email autoresponder.
This is simply a service that allows you to store a database of emails for people who have requested information from you, and then to send out either pre-set messages (the autoresponder feature), or newly composed messages and timely reminders (the broadcast feature) to your entire list.
There are many good autoresponder services available, with some of the most popular being Aweber, Get Response, iContact, Mail Chimp, and Constant Contact.
There are other ways to stay in touch and build relationships, such as a Facebook fan page or group, or Twitter or Pinterest followers.
Any of those can be a good addition to your lead generation strategy and relationship building efforts, but I highly recommend focusing your social media efforts to directing the followers to your email list.
For me, this is primarily a matter of ownership and control.
You do not own or control your list of followers on social media.
For example, your fans of your Facebook page are owned and controlled by Facebook.
Facebook even controls which of your fans actually see your posts – and this is usually a very small percentage.
Some studies suggest that the actual reach ranges from about 17% down to single-digit percentages.
Facebook can still be a powerful tool for building your business.
I'm not bashing on using social media.
I am simply suggesting that you direct followers to your email list, and focus on that as your primary means of communication.
You own your email list.
You may choose when and how to communicate with them.
Ok, so the autoresponder will take care of the relationship-building piece and give you a way to make offers to your audience, selling your product or service.
Your next element is the incentive, bait, bribe, offer you present which convinces people to opt in to your email list.
This free piece of information you give in exchange for an email address is often called a “lead magnet.”
Popular forms of lead magnets include reports, videos, templates, cheat sheets, diagrams, mind maps, audios, etc.
Almost any way that will deliver a small chunk of highly valuable content which solves a very specific problem.
In our example scenario earlier you requested a free report on alternative cleaning solutions.
Think about a very small, specific problem your ideal prospect faces that you can solve for them with a bite-size piece of easy-to-consume content.
Decide what medium makes the most sense for delivering the information, and then create your lead magnet.
I prefer reports, videos, cheat sheets, templates, and checklists.
But the bottom line is to use whatever media is best suited to convey the information, and that works best with your personality and natural strengths.
If you are a gifted writer, do a report that is engaging and informative.
Are you a gifted speaker with a magnetic voice?
Consider an audio recording.
If you have a very strong personal presence to which people connect and are drawn, maybe a video is a great choice for you.
Whatever you choose to do, keep it brief, and make it valuable.
It shouldn't take you more than one to three hours total to create.
If it is taking you longer than that, you are doing it wrong.

Are you stuck for ideas on a lead magnet, or think you don't have anything valuable to offer?
Go look at the top 5 books on Amazon for your market.
Check out the chapter titles for all of them.
You will likely see a recurring trend of topics being covered.
Choose one small topic that is addressed in several of the books.
If you don't feel like you have ideas of your own to contribute, read the chapter on your chosen lead magnet topic from three of the books, and then put what you learn into your own words.
It really is that simple.
Done For You Lead Magnets
Many marketing systems offer options for lead magnets that are already created, and which you can use to build your list.
The lead generation and marketing system I use offers me some amazing options for lead magnets which range from free training, to ebooks, to templates, to video scripts, headline formulas, and Facebook advertising strategies.
Opt In Page
The last structural element that is required for you to generate your MLM leads or network marketing leads, is an opt-in page.
This is a simple one-page website where your offer for your lead magnet is displayed, and people can request it by putting their email address in the box to get it.
This is often called a “squeeze page,” “lead page,” “landing page,” “capture page,” or many other terms.
I am calling it an “opt-in” page, because it is where the prospect “opts-in” to join your email list and become a lead.
And I think that term has a little more positive connotation.
No one wants to be squeezed.
But lots of people may want the opportunity to opt-in.
The best opt-in pages are very simple, with only a few elements.
Marketers often screw this part of the process up by trying to make their opt-in page flashy or overly complicated.
The page has only one purpose.
Get the visitor to enter their email in the box and hit the “submit” button.
Crucial Opt In Page Elements
Here are the essential elements every opt in page must have:
- Call to Action
- Opt In Box
Don't over complicate it.
Your headline must clearly state the major benefit the visitor will experience.
You must offer your “free gift” that will solve the visitor's problem, and give them a call to action, telling them to enter their email address in the box.
You must have an opt-in box for them to enter their email address in with the words “Free Instant Access” on the submit button.
Your autoresponder service will provide the code for this, which you can just copy and paste into your webpage.
Done For You Opt In Pages?
If you're not technically savvy and don't want to mess with trying to build your own opt-in page, I don't blame you.
And there is no need for you to try to learn that skill on top of the marketing education you are already attempting to get.
There are nearly always options for getting someone else to handle the technical work for you.
You could simply post a job on a freelance website like Guru, ODesk, or Elance and get it done for a small fee.
Marketing systems that offer lead magnets for you to use will often provide done-for-you opt-in page options as well.
Some of them will only allow you to use their pre-set templates, but others, like the one I happen to use, will allow you to customize and integrate opt-in pages with your own autoresponder service.
The last thing you will need is a way to consistently get visitors to see the offer on your opt-in page.
This can be done through a structural asset you build online, like a blog, articles, video channel.
But it could also be accomplished by means of an on-demand traffic supply through PPC traffic on Google, Bing, Facebook, or a number of other platforms.
Free traffic can be had through numerous avenues, such as forum posting and participating in social media groups.
Whatever you choose as your method for getting visitors to your opt-in page, make sure that it is a good fit for your skills, is something you can do with your current resources, and that it aligns well with your long-term business goals.
Paid traffic sources have the advantage of speed.
But if you don't have money to lose in the beginning, you may be better off taking the approach of generating free traffic.
There is always a learning curve on any method for generating traffic, and you will often lose a little bit of money at first as you begin to test and learn how to effectively use a new traffic source.
Whatever you do, DO NOT bounce around from tactic to tactic, trying every which way to get visitors to your site.
Choose one method, and then dig down deep and learn everything there is to know about that method.
Get your hands dirty and try out the method.
Find out for yourself what works, and perhaps more importantly, what doesn't work.
But don't give up.
Stick with it until you become a master at generating traffic from that source.
Only then should you branch out to attempt to learn a new method.
Beginners often waste months, and sometimes years, jumping from one tactic to the next, never taking time to really get good at any one thing, and then wondering why they don't have anything to show for their efforts.
Don't let that be you.
Allow yourself to be just dumb enough to be teachable.

The only way to ensure that you succeed in your lead generation efforts is through patient persistence.
Don't give up when you face obstacles and things don't go your way.
Keep going when you find out that you need to learn something new in order to make a tactic successful.
Perseverance seems to be the one characteristic that consistently separates those who succeed in this business from those who fail.
You can generate your own leads for network marketing or MLM.
I know you can do it, because I do it every day.
But it took work and dedication on my part to see it through, and never give up, even when I struggled terribly at the beginning.
It's perfectly normal to suck at something when you first start out.
You wouldn't sit down to write your first piece of music and expect it to be like Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
You wouldn't shoot a basketball for the first time and expect to compete with Michael Jordan.
So don't think that you will attempt to generate your first leads and be on par with the professionals who have been at it for years.
Yes, you can get there.
But it is going to take some time.
You are going to have to learn a lot of things.
And you are going to need a lot of practice.
